Tereza Bartůňková is a freelance visual artist based in Prague, Czech Republic. Her artistic practice spans drawing, graphic arts, printmaking, photography, set and costume design, object creation, light design, and audiovisual media. Tereza holds an M.A. in Scenography from the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theater at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU). She studied Photography and Media at the College of Graphic Design in Prague, and completed study internships in the Studio of Scenography at the Dresden University of Fine Arts (HfBK) and the Studio of Illustration and Graphics at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM).
In her authorial projects, Tereza experiments with a wide variety of natural materials and media, translating them into immersive visual environments. Her works, such as From the Ashes (2023), Aviary (2021), Dialogue (2016–2020), and Tamura (2018), reflect her ongoing fascination with the relationship between the inner world, the body, natural elements, and the mythological or dreamlike landscapes of human imagination.
Tereza's collaborations extend to leading Czech theaters and experimental venues across Europe, where she designs ephemeral atmospheres through set, costume, and light design, revealing hidden aspects of reality and transporting audiences into subconscious realms. Notable projects include The Garden for the multimedia stage Laterna Magika at the National Theater in Prague, and collaborations with Na Zábradlí Theatre, Komedie Theatre, A Studio Rubín, and Alfred ve Dvoře Theater. She also works closely with musicians, visually translating sound through drawing, live light performances, and light installations at events such as the ambient music series Silent_Night at Ponec Theatre. Her work has been featured at Signal Festival, as well as in numerous galleries including the City Gallery of Prague, the Benedikt Rejt Gallery, and OGV Jihlava. She creates illustrations for books, theater and concert posters, and vinyl artworks, infusing each piece with her sensitivity to atmosphere and storytelling.
A love for raw materials, handcraft, textures, drawing, and a sensitivity to light accompanies her on her ever-evolving artistic journey. Drawing and working with light are her primary means of expression – she draws with light, creates spatial drawings, and continually explores new possibilities for blending light and darkness. Deeply interested in the affective power of light, ephemeral spaces, and the fragile boundaries between reality and dream, Tereza continues to explore new visual techniques and materials, with a focus on opening imaginative spaces for viewers to encounter their own inner landscapes. Embracing both the communal energy of theater and music, as well as the solitude of her personal artistic practice, she remains committed to evolving her art with authenticity, curiosity, and poetic vision.
